Look who I found in Victoria falls – Wade and Jenny. Old GSD friends. Wade was my fantastic trainer who helped me to train for and qualify several dogs in IPO. Wade still has a German Shepherd here.
Where have all the people gone, where have they gone….?

ZIMBABWE KENNEL CLUB – IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS
There is an outbreak of kennel cough in the Harare area, possibly country wide. Please follow the safety suggestions listed. Do not take your dogs out of their home environment. Do not allow visitors to bring dogs to your home. If you do allow visitors in your home, lock your dogs away and keep the visitors restricted to one area that you can seal off from your dogs. Do not go visiting friends who own dogs. Do not touch dogs when you go out of your own home. Do not attend dogs shows. This is not a joke. Kennel cough is a killer. Although you personally will not contract kennel cough you can carry the virus on your hands, feet and clothes. Stay wise. Stay safe. More importantly, keep your dogs safe.

AVOID LOSING YOUR FAMILY DOG
A few guidelines to help avoid the anguish of losing your beloved pet. I have noticed that there are more and more “Lost Dogs” being reported on Mike Garden’s ” Bambazonke”
- Check that there are NO holes in your fence that your dog can get through, bearing in mind the size of your dog
- If you have a small dog and a bar type gate, as opposed to a solid gate, block off the lower portion of the gate with small mesh chiken wire or shade cloth to prevent your dog escaping through the bars. Check that the dog cannot get under the gate. I have seen that happen! Make sure you block that off as well.
- Having made sure that your dog cannot escape while you are at home, make sure, when you drive out the gate the dog cannot follow you. Before you drive away, make sure your dog is still in the yard. If you cannot be sure that the dog is secure in the yard, put the dog in the kitchen, if you are out for a short while or in the garage, somewhere safe, while you are driving away. I have known of dogs following their owner when they walk out the gate unbeknown to the owner that the dog is out loose.
- When you arrive home and open your electric gate and have left your dog in the yard. Locate them first before you drive in! Make sure your dog is secure and won’t run under your wheels or out the gate to chase another dog down the road. Again, once inside your yard, BEFORE you close your gate, make sure your dog is inside your property.
- If you must take your dog for a ride on the back of your pickup, make sure it is securely tied with a collar, not a slip chain, on to a fixture, on a short lead, so it cannot get over the side while you are moving.
- If you have lost your loved one please email Mike Garden’s Ndepi at keara@Ndeipi.co.zw.
- Finally, make sure that you are the be all and end all in your dog’s life with loving care. It will not run away.

Kennel Club christmas party
Clive Moss and Alex McKinlay
On 14 October 2017 Mr Clive Moss died after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. Clive was a well known figure in the Obedience and Working Trials world in this country for some years, going back to the sixties. Clive left Zimbabwe to live in South Africa.
It is with great sorrow we have to advise that Mr Alex H McKinlay died on 28 September 2017 in Kitwe, Zambia. For over thirty years we have seen Pat and Alex visiting us on a regular basis with their Salukis, Long and Smooth Coat Chihuahuas, Papillons, Affenpinschers. Alex was well entrenched in the formation and running of the Zambian Kennel Club, well and truly dedicated to dogdom in his own country. He was well known outside Africa, having judged in a number of countries. Our deepest sympathy to Pat, may God give her strength to see her through this extremely trying time.
Would Neville have a giggle?
Via the website I received a request from Erica Crouch to help to find out where Neville Crouch’s partner was.
My father and his wife bred Chow Chows many years ago. He was Neville Crouch She was Ursula They were not married. I am wondering if you could assist me in finding out the name of a friend of theirs who bred Boerboels or someone who can assist with Ursulas surname or who could assist me with what happened to Ursula after my father passed away.
Thank you in advance.
I wrote to a few “oldies” to see if they could remember or help. Most of them reacted but had no idea where Ursula, Neville’s partner was, or what her surname was. One person told me she had gone to the UK to live there. Others wrote what they knew of the old times and one was amazing to find out more about Ursula.
One reaction was quite interesting about Neville and Ursula’s time from Meryl:
I think you are right about Ursula’s surname being le Kok.
Roly and I were invited to their place for several excellent lunches over the yrs – I seem to remember that Gordon and Judy were there on at least one occasion?….
I remember a couple who they were very friendly with who were not members of the Kennel Club, and were always at their lunches or braais, but have no idea if they had Boerboels?
I know he was very friendly with a couple in Gweru and used to stay with them when he went down to their shows, can’t remember their names, but she was involved on the Committee – seem to remember they had Boxers – but did not show them.
Roy wasn’t Neville very friendly with John Ripley’s son? – seem to remember they used to drink together in the bar at KCH – think his name was Steve? – I am in touch with Yvonne, so she could possibly ask Steve?
Another reaction was from Roy, amazing he managed to find this:
Hi Ilse,
Follow this link on YouTube. I am sure it is Ursula La Cock which is the name of Neville’s partner.
Here is a picture of her with a Bar Throated Apalis on her arm.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDqitnnugI9wWxgl_2u_L2g
She must be getting on now. I remember her telling the story of when she went to the passport office she was told to go to the front of the queue. When she got there, there were about six people in front of her. She said “If any of you are older than 81 you can go in front of me”. They passed her to the front.
And Erica’s response.
I cannot thank you enough I got the e mails tonight and straight away hopped onto youtube and giggled like crazy, this is so how I remember Ursula, full of beans, life and mischief. I then did a search on facebook and found her still going strong at 92 doing a pushup challenge. She is on facebook as Ursula Lacock.
Please thank everyone for me.
Hugest hugs
Erica
