Kennel Club of Harare – DOG’S Christmas party

The Kennel Club of Harare ended its fantastic training year with the “DOG’S Christmas party” on Sunday 13 December. The weather was sunny and quite a lot of our members came with their pooches and a plate of eats for the humans at teatime.

The fun started with the receiving committee in their Christmas outfit

Our Dog’s Christmas Party!

Come and join us at our Dog’s Christmas Party!!!!!!  Yes, your dog can bring his handler… Fun and games for all (no fancy dress this year).   Just bring a plate of snacks or cake and come and have some fun with your dog – 8.30am for 9am at the Kennel Club of Harare.  There will be no entry charge.  There will be a break for tea / drinks (cash bar) and cake / snacks etc at 10.30am.  Some members have said that they would like to stay and have a braai afterwards so those wanting to do that, please bring your own meat and salad.

GAMES – these will be in the ring by the kitchen.

DOG JUMPING – will be in the ring closest to Hampden Street.  Classes for all dogs, newcomers, beginners etc.

Some of the games which will be played on Sunday are as follows:

Musical chairs – one class for beginner dogs and handlers which will be followed by another class for the more advanced dogs (those who can sit and stay on their own).

Fastest recall to handler – your dog will be held at one end of the ring and the handler will go to the other end of the ring.  You will then call your dog to you…a stop watch is used to do the timing.  The fastest dog back to its owner wins!

Eleven legged race – find yourself a partner as two handlers and two dogs are needed….handlers legs are tied together with a sock, with a dog on each side and competitors have to run across the ring and back…

Down on the spot – send your dog to the spot and down it.

Catch the ball – handlers are in a line with their dogs sitting opposite. Handler throws a ball for the dog to catch – the dog has two chances to catch. If the dog misses the ball, then he drops out of game.  The remaining handler moves one step further away from the dog and throws again.

Dog jumping

Dogs must be 8 months old to enter.

Small/Large dogs who have done quite a bit of jumping cannot enter beginners.  This is a fun event.  You choose the course that you want your dog to jump… The jumps will be numbered with value points (there will be a time limit) – the dog with the highest points wins!

  1. Small dogs who are beginners – they will be allowed to jump on or off the lead.
  2. Small dogs who can jump off the lead.
  3. Large dogs…but beginners – they will be allowed to jump on or off the lead.
  4. Large dogs who can jump off the lead.

We look forward to seeing you all there on Sunday!

The skies cleared up and we had a wonderful sunny day. The party started with a dress-up competition. Various wonderful scenes were shown by the dogs and their owners.

First aid was represented by two dogs and their helpers:

One of the other competition was getting their dog to ‘Drop-down’ on the “bulls-eye’. This could be done by either sending the dog forward and down it on the the Bulls eye, or leaving their dogs and walk to the other side and recall the dog and dropping it on the way onto the Bulls eye.

One of the very good dogs was Bruce’s dog, but unfortunately the picture came out very blurred. 2013 KCH 23 Dog Party.jpg 2013 KCH 24 Dog Party.jpg

Canine: Good Citizen Bronze Level Test

Dear Members,

As mentioned in the KCH Newsletter sent out yesterday, we will be holding a Canine Good Citizen Bronze Level Test for the first time to be held after the KCH Championship Dog Jumping and Obedience Show on Sunday 9 June 2013 and will be conducted by Jack Taentzer (Judge from South Africa). The Canine Good Citizen Test is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community and it encourages and stresses the importance of responsible dog ownership by the owners. Any dog (pure bred /crossbred) may take part provided it has had its required vaccinations.

The Scheme is a programme comprising of the Puppy Certificate, the Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels. We urge owners to make the effort to train their dogs as they will experience the benefits of their dogs having good manners, responding well to household routines and they will be a joy to live with.

The Bronze Level consists of the following tests and Evaluators sometimes combine elements during the actual test:

  1. Accepting a stranger – this test consists of a stranger approaching the dog and handler in a casual, every day situation without the dog showing signs of resentment or shyness.
  2. Putting on a collar and lead.
  3. Present the dog for examination on a lead.
  4. Allowing basic grooming procedures.
  5. Demonstrating that the dog can be calmed easily after praise or play.
  6. Releasing dog from lead, play with or without toy, recall and attach lead.
  7. Walking on loose lead without distraction.
  8. Walking on lead passing through door/gate.
  9. Walking on lead passing people and dogs.
  10. Reacting appropriately to another dog.
  11. Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place.
  12. Reacting appropriately to distractions.
  13. Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner.

Please note that no fee will be charged for participating in the Canine Good Citizen Bronze Certificate Test. Please, however, e-mail Linda Lamb (meadowf@mweb.co.zw) should you wish to enter so that preparation can be made for the entries. There will be copies of the Canine Good Citizen Programme available for sale to non-ZKC members for $5 a copy on Sunday, and free to ZKC members. Should any members have any further queries with regard to the Canine Good Citizen Programme, please contact Sam Fernandes – email: mcfernzw@gmail.com or cell: 0773 215 212.

Best regards
